Oduduwa: The god of the earth and the founder of the Yoruba people

Oduduwa is believed to have been asked by Olodumare, to undertake the task of creating the physical world and its inhabitants, after finding Obatala drunk. Oduduwa, was given a calabash filled with soil, a cockerel, and some palm nuts, which he used to create the world and its various elements. Oduduwa is also credited with establishing the first Yoruba kingdom in Ife, where he descended from the heavens with chains. He is revered as a great leader, warrior, and strategist who united the various Yoruba clans into a single kingdom. Oduduwa is worshipped as a powerful Orisha who protects and guides his followers, while also been associated with fertility, prosperity, and the earth itself. His followers believe that he can help them with any earthly matters, from farming to business ventures.

 

One of the most well-known stories about Oduduwa involves his journey to the underworld to obtain the gift of prophecy. It is said that he descended into the earth to meet with the powerful and mystical Orisha of Orunmila, who granted him the ability to see into the future and understand the mysteries of the universe.
